How to get to the Maraú Peninsula and Barra Grande
Updated on October 7, 2026 ✓ Information verified on October 6, 2026 adapted version of the Portuguese original
The Maraú Peninsula is harder to reach than most beach destinations in Bahia, and according to Wikivoyage that is precisely what has helped Barra Grande keep its village feel. There are three main routes.
1. Via Camamu, by boat
The most common route is to reach the town of Camamu by road, on the BA-001 highway, and cross Camamu Bay by boat to Barra Grande. Wikivoyage mentions two kinds of crossing:
- Larger, slower boats (converted fishing boats), with a journey of about two hours.
- Speedboats for a few people, taking about 30 minutes.
Times and fares change: confirm in advance, especially if you want to arrive before dark.
2. By the peninsula road
You can also drive along the peninsula itself, on dirt and sand roads. Wikivoyage mentions road access from the Itacaré area and recommends a suitable vehicle (4x4). After rain, some stretches can be in bad shape: ask someone who knows the road before you go.
3. By plane
The English Wikipedia states that the Barra Grande airstrip (IATA code MUU) has no scheduled flights: arrival by air is by air taxi or private plane. See Barra Grande Airport.
Which to choose
- First trip, no car: road to Camamu and boat to Barra Grande.
- Your own car and time to spare: the peninsula road, with a suitable vehicle.
- Short on time, bigger budget: air taxi.
