Ponta do Mutá is the northern tip of the Maraú Peninsula, where the village of Barra Grande stands. Here the open sea meets the entrance to Camamu Bay. The English Wikipedia, in its article on the Camamu Bay protected area, describes Barra Grande as the seaside village “on Ponta do Mutá”.
What to see
- The lighthouse. The point has a lighthouse marking the entrance to the bay, visible in the Ministry of Tourism’s aerial photo.
- The bay. On the inner side the water is usually calmer, with anchored boats and islands in the distance.
- The sunset. Because the point faces the bay, the late afternoon is one of the village’s most traditional rituals. See sunset at Ponta do Mutá.
Precautions
Where the bay meets the open sea, the current can be strong. Only swim where there is local guidance and avoid going into the water in the channels used by boats.
Practical tips
- Go in the late afternoon to watch the sunset over the bay.
- Beware of the current where the bay meets the sea.
